Reading

Reading is complex. Helping your child to read can be equally complex. There are many aspects of reading that may be challenging for a child like figuring out tricky words, comprehending what they read, or even being motivated to read. According to many experts, readers are not just children who can read, they are also children who do read (source). The amount of reading children do is highly correlated with how well they read. Click below to learn some of the most effective ways to help your reader.

Early Literacy

Early literacy skills are built well before a child begins formal reading and writing instruction. When you read to your child, interact with them about the print they see in the world (signs, cereal boxes, advertisements), and encourage and support their early writing efforts, your child establishes a firm foundation for learning to read.  Through early reading and writing experiences, children learn why we read and write. They develop background knowledge and vocabulary, print concepts, and phonemic awareness. Most importantly, they develop a desire to learn to read and gain self-confidence in their own abilities to read and write. Click below to learn how you can help your child develop critical early literacy skills.

Writing

Writing is so much more than letter formation or writing sentences down on a page. Writing is complex because it is thinking about something in particular, considering how to share what you are thinking, and deciding how you will make it interesting for your reader. To become the very best writers, children need to learn how to plan, compose, revise, and edit their own pieces of writing.   Click below to learn some of the most effective ways to help your child become a better and more motivated writer.

Reading Levels

Reading Levels are a gauge for selecting good fit books for your child. Reading levels can be used in schools, libraries, and book stores to help readers select good fit books. Click below to learn how to use reading levels to select books and understand how different texts work, as well as, how you can best help your child as they move up the reading level continuum becoming a better reader.
