Book Inspired Adventures

Sometimes our best adventures are the ones inspired by our reading. These adventures sometimes take us to places like the zoo or a fire station and sometimes they inspire us to do something.

My daughter loves Pinkalicious. We have many of the books in the fun series by Victoria Kann. One of her favorites is Pinkalicious and the Pink Drink. In this book, Pinkalicious decides to set up a lemonade stand in order to get money to purchase a treat. The sweet and comical story shows some of the difficulties and the success Pinkalicious has with her lemonade stand.

After reading this book many times, my daughter decided she wanted to set up a lemonade and art stand to earn money to buy a new toy. She also thought about another one of her favorites, Amelia Bedelia Takes the Cake, and decided to add some baked goods to her sale too.

My daughter created many pieces of art to sell (This is one of her passions so she created about 20 drawings). We went through the process of making the brownies and lemonade and making sure we had all of the materials we needed (tablecloth, napkins, cups, baggies for the brownies, and change). The kids (little brother helped too) had a great time waving down cars and calling out to our neighbors to ask if they wanted to buy something. This challenged both of my children to step out of their comfort zone to worked hard to achieve their goal. My daughter was so excited to plan and execute her first business and even earned enough to buy the toy wanted and save some money for another day.

Because of the books she’d heard read aloud, she had a great idea of how a lemonade/bake sale would go. She even referenced the books while she was setting up her stand.

Books can inspire and lead you to try new things.

For Older Kids

If you are looking for a book for your older child, I highly recommend How to Turn $100 into $1,000,000. This book is written for kids and is informative and engaging. I have used this book with many fourth and fifth grade classrooms and it is always a hit. The reading level on this book is a level W so it may be too challenging for your elementary-aged child to read independently but it would make a great read for you to do together. I think this book would be a great read (independently or together) for kids older than elementary level too. It is a fun read full of entertaining facts and interesting descriptions of financial practices that are in kid-friendly language without being too simplified.

Books Can Inspire Visits Too

If your child enjoys reading about animals trips to the zoo or pet store are fantastic for seeing the topic of their reading up close and personal.

Does your child like to read about rescue vehicles or everyday heroes? Take them to visit a firehouse to learn more about their work and their equipment.

Is your child fascinated by sea life or mermaids? Trips to the aquarium or local science museum could be super engaging and informative.

Is your child interested in learning more about bugs or birds or nature in general? Trips to the park or science museum can expand their knowledge about the topic.

The more experiences your child has with a topic the easier their reading about that topic becomes. They will be more familiar with the words used to describe the topic and the things associated with it. They will understand descriptions better. They will be motivated to read and learn more about a topic they are interested in.
