I have such fond memories of cooking with my mom when I was growing up. I loved deciding on a recipe to try, gathering the ingredients and materials, mixing and pouring, and even making some messes. I loved the opportunity to spend time with my mom – we would talk and laugh and just enjoy being with one another. I also loved the sense of satisfaction when we pulled out from the oven the some-what less than perfect biscuits or we tasted the sweet treats or soup we made. These memories take me back to some of my most favorite times. Because of these times, I have always loved to bake. I have also found that I enjoy cooking.

Now that my kids are getting older, I am so excited to share more kitchen experiences with them. We have baked and cooked together before but mostly around holidays or when we want to make a special snack for a playdate. These typically involve more assembly or decorating on their part.
(Check out these cute crabs we recently assembled during a playdate. They were originally supposed to be monster mouths, but my son thought they looked more crabs so we added some apple slices for the legs)
The Gift of Raddish Kids
One evening my mom called and mentioned that she wanted to give my kids a Raddish Kids subscription. I didn’t know much about this subscription so I checked it out online (www.raddishkids.com). Once I did a little bit of reading about it – I decided it was well worth the try (and I am so glad we did)!
Great Packaging Filled with Entertaining and Educational Goodies
Each month we receive a cute box filled with vibrant recipe cards and shopping lists for three recipes. I love that the recipes are illustrated helping my son who isn’t reading yet and my daughter, who is reading, but is encountering many kitchen-specific words she has never seen. Plus they are fun- they enjoy looking at the step-by-step instructions because of the way they are presented. Following step-by-step directions can be challenging but the layout of the ingredients list and step-by-step directions makes it easier for kids to follow.
Fun, New Tools
Each box also comes with a new kitchen tool. My kids have received measuring cups, whisks, cookie cutters, and spatulas – just to name a few. They love having their own tools – plus they come in vibrant colors that my kids love which makes them so much more interesting than my kitchen tools. Because my parents ordered the subscription for both the kids, we get two tools and two patches in our box. We only get one set of recipe cards, one shopping list, and one set of table talk/activity directions.
Patches to Show What They’ve Accomplished
My kids love the patches that get ironed on to their aprons indicating that they made at least one of the recipes from that theme. They are so proud to show off evidence of their adventures.
Table Talk
The feature that I wasn’t expecting but I have loved is the table talk cards and the games/activities that coordinate with the theme. Each kit comes with table talk cards which are thought-provoking questions that have been really fun to talk about with the kids. Some of our favorite questions are:
– What does it mean to be a good sport?
– List 3 examples of good table manners.
– How do your practice gratitude throughout the year?
– What is your favorite room in your home? Why?
As you can see from the image above there have also been some really fun activities. In our most recent kit, celebrating athletics – there were several kitchen games like Basket-Foil and Speed Whipping.
Additional Benefits
As a result of their experience with the kits, both of my children have tried new foods and even my super picky eater has been willing to try more things. They have loved the time together with me and they have loved the process of making new things. This is one of my favorite gifts my parents have given us. It has encouraged fun time together that has been entertaining with yummy results.
My favorite benefits of Radish Kids (beyond learning how to cook) are:
- The fun time we spend together
- Learning to follow directions
- Authentic reading practice
- Authentic math practice
- Cooperation and working together
- Being able to enjoy the end result
If you are looking for an option for gifts from family members or if you are looking for a fun way to introduce your kids to cooking and new foods, check out Raddish Kids! We love it and we continue to receiving our kit each month!
